After watching this I had to do some research to find out if any of this was based on facts, a lot of it did happen, political wise and the Queen's health and the loss of 17 children, and her friendship to Sarah! But whether the whole lesbian thing happened, no one would know that although there were rumors at the time also! It was more dark and morbid then funny, the acting was exceptional and I love the old period costumes and a take on how we think they lived back then but we really don't know, was it like this? Maybe, maybe it was worse... the whole moral of the story was what? I'm not sure, and the ending was just crap! So yeah, there was a lot to love and a lot to hate about this movie, I certainly wouldn't watch it again. But also glad I did.

This one was odd for a period piece, there is a very old movie with the same satyrical undertone that was borderline sexual as was this if not overly (i clearly cannot remember the movie, was it perhaps the Divine comedy? It had some religious tone to it, I could be hallucinating).

The costumes, the music, the pace and the acting are superb but as monarchy movies go the debauchery is the main storyline which might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Olivia Colman is deserving of her Academy nomination, i do see the attempted comedic side of the film but more in the like of punny vulgarity which i sometimes find funny, depends on the person.

Overall this only drags attention because of the actors, the direction is good but some scenes overall feel reminded me a bit of Marie Antoinettes by Sofia Coppola, all of this has been done before; is it bad?, No; worth a one time watch?, Yes.

The Web-Dl copy is a bit dark but watchable.

Thanks uploaders for the links

Once again I'm the oddball going against the grain, but i really enjoyed this movie. When i first put i wondered what the hell did i download and had to go look it up to make sure a wrong movie wasn't linked or something because it was very off-putting in the first scene when you weren't expecting it. It wasn't hard to get into after that and it kept my interest through the whole movie. There didn't seem to be any unnecessarily long scenes or anything and the acting was fantastic. I guess you'd have to like period pieces to like this one, but i thought it was very good and well put together. The costumes and sets were amazing. Such attention to detail, just beautiful. Oh, and I wouldn't have labeled this as also being a comedy at all. Not sure why they did that. 9/10⭐

I, unlike most here, absolutely loved this movie. Every single minute of it. It does not pretend to be a realistic version of that time period. I think if you take it as it is, a fictional film, then you can't help but love this film and admire all about it. The acting is incredible. Olivia Coleman is so wonderful in this film it is worth watching if only to watch her performance. The pace is perfect (and I am not one AT ALL to have a problem with very slow paced movies, which this movie is NOT) It moves along very quickly. The costumes, the design all of it are amazing, and I think behind it all, this movie has plenty to say. It is not a historical piece about the conflicts at the time but about Friendship. Loyalty to another person. How easily people are manipulated when they do not know themselves well. I think those who expect any "period piece" to actually portray history as it really was then, should watch documentaries instead. This is not a true story no more than any of the Marvel Comic nonsense everyone loves is "REAL" but, for some, is a form of entertainment. Again, I think this is a movie about the evil people do to each other in the name of ego, money, power and even survival etc. It is no different today. Even though it is put into the little box all films must be (for whatever reason) put into, I saw this as a spoof on "Period Pieces" - All one need do is watch the dance scene to know what the writer was after. I laughed and cried during this movie and have not seen a cast like this, mesh so well in a very long time. It was also refreshing to see a movie that was mostly about women. A film written for and about women. Huge talents and a huge 10 from me. Thanks so much Twomovies for all the great films you bring to those of us with a variety of tastes.

wow polarizing reviews in the comment section hehe! Well my humble honest opinion was that I really liked this film. Not a huge fan of period pieces but this was one of the few period pieces where I felt there was a driving plot, fast paced as opposed to the usual slow paced ones, and not dull performances but good performances. If you liked the Duchess, Far from Maddening Crowd, Billy August' Les Miserables, good adaptations of Charles Dickens story, The Woman in White, the BBC's adaptation of War and Pace, and Sunset Song then you'll find a soft spot for this one which is a bit outside the box. I liked it and Ditzygypsy mentioned its from the director of the Lobster and I for one hated that film and vowed not to much movies from the director well I could stomach from this movie so don't be too frightened hehe!

@Yuroparenti BTW! Just want to add, wouldn't consider this movie AT ALL as a comedy dark comedy or otherwise I wouldn't consider it a comedy so strange Colman who I don't think is the real star of the movie, should've gotten a Golden Globe for this, Emma Stone on the other hand well done on this film.

I was so looking forward to this. I now see that all the very best few seconds of this movie were in the trailer. I hated this as much as I hated The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. I had no idea all three of these movies are by the same messed-up weirdo until I googled a query about the ending of this movie today. I googled it because I had no idea what on earth the two actors were doing on the screen in the last scene. I replayed it three times, and still didn’t know if it was morbid, kinky, or what, and I even had to make sure that it indeed WAS the ending. Weird, unfunny, not charming, ugly visuals, really dark lighting (lack of) in the hallway and candle-lit scenes (and this is a DVD Screener, so it is good quality), awful makeup...I could go on. I don’t like big-faced Rachel Weisz really at all, but I do give her a chance if the movie looks interesting, like “Denial”, and once again, she didn’t disappoint me, and I disliked her as per usual. It’s just another depressing movie. Not as stupid, pointless, absurd, ridiculous, and horrifying, perhaps, as The Killing of a Sacred Deer, but it’s just dark, dank, and dull and definitely the opposite of divine. But thank you uploaders.

@ditzygypsy I did not notice this was by the same director as The Killing of a Sacred Deer. No wonder I didn't like this one, I absolutely detested that one. Thanks for the info.

I truly enjoyed this movie eventhough the historical depiction is not all accurate. Nevertheless as a period piece, this is devine 8/10*** smiley .

Let's put it this way: people who dislike this movie are not capable of understanding its subject, Its treatment and its masterful tightrope skill. So it's up to you.

I had so much expectation for this movie... but the three people reviewing it are saying it may not be good. I am going to wait to read more comments before I decide if I watch it or not. Thanks for the comments and the links.

@matesaca Well, if you’re hoping it’ll be funny and charming, it’s the opposite of that. If you liked The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, you’ll probably like this too. Maybe that helps?

I did not care for this movie and I usually love period pieces. I hated the way they portrayed Queen Anne, although she does give a great performance. The characters are all shallow except for her, I didn't really feel anything for them. The whole thing was just...meh. 5/10

@rickgrimesrocks I hated it too, and contrary to some people’s comments about “if you don’t like it, it’s because you’re incapable of getting it”, I do get what it wanted to show and say, but it just failed miserably and did it in a dull, lifeless, tasteless, befuddled way. It is not a highbrow movie. It’s a piece of crap trying to be art just like the guy’s other two awful movies that I’ve subjected myself to. It’s not smart; it’s bad.

The thinking behind this movie is not unlike that of Ken Russell's movies of the 70's-and it's a kind of thinking that is fairly reprehensible....we're invited to gasp and giggle at this vulgar, perverse version of historical events as if it were shockingly revealing rather than just grating and puerile...what it adds up to is an insultingly smug, aggressively condescending approach to both history and character ...and all the while you can feel that the filmmakers found the whole thing deliciously naughty...what they fail to realize is that this lipsmacking, unrelievedly
jaundiced view of the past is as fraudulent as a sunny whitewashing would be...and really, is it such a daring, novel idea that beneath the pristine surface of aristocratic society lie the baser human drives?..now, it's not as if this ripping-the-mask-off premise can't work ; for example, it worked beautifully in the 1988 "Dangerous Liaisons" (which was based on a fictional work) because the filmmakers had the taste and control to stay within the bounds of the story and develop the characters so that the movie grew in intensity and deepened as it went along...they didn't traffic in mean-spirited self-congratulation
and they didn't broadly play down to the audience; instead they trusted the audience..."The Favorite," on the other hand, is too sneeringly self-infatuated to have any real resonance..luckily it is not without a few compensations : some of the visuals are striking(the art direction is superb) despite the director's silly penchant for the fisheye lens and
for the most part it's briskly , even bracingly paced...above all there is the titanic performance that Olivia Colman gives as Queen Anne...she is both terrifying and pitiable --usually at the same time because she is at her most infantile in her most peremptory moments ... it is an utterly astounding performance that thrillingly belies the irritatingly arch tone of what surrounds it

@TheAuthority Wow. That's an incredible review. You're a hella good writer and balanced/trustworthy critic. I was on the fence about this one--seems like more of a stunt or some kind of postmodern slap in the face to period pieces or something. Thanks for your thoughts!

WOW,That was a real crazy mess. I wish I had 119 minutes back. I was hoping for a nice period piece. Was nothing nice about this movie. Crude, crass and pointless are generous. 2/5 is also generous. My POV
